Ok. I know this sounds like a common problem, but I read allot of the forums and still didn't see anyone with the exact same issue.
I have a 1973, 16' larson with a I/O Mercruiser, 140 GM 4 cylinder.
One of my buddies was driving. He shifted into reverse and didn't wait long enough for it to catch before giving it throttle (hard clunk!) Ever since then we can't get it into forward or reverse except by the following method:
1 - Turn off the engine
2 - Put shift lever in forward or reverse
3 - Turn the prop either cw or ccw until it catches a gear
4 - Start the engine in gear
Obviously we only did this once in order to get back to shore. The engine did not overheat. The water pump was running and I did not see any metal shavings at all in the engine compartment. I can see the shift lever moving also. I don't think the cable is bad.
I have a repair manual and will start going thru it tonight. Just wanted to know if someone had an idea of where I should begin looking? Or what the problem might be?
