My 2006 5.0 Mercruiser has a 14.5X19 prop. Could I go to a say 15" diameter prop without problems? Would there be a advantage ?

Thanx

Re: Prop diameter question

Speaking very basically.assuming the 15 would clear the trim tab(which could be changed if necessary) the 15 would fit.In the same pitch it might lower rpm slightly, might resist venting slightly better.

Re: Prop diameter question

That's the problem. People "think" but don't analyze. Not to be critical, but when choosing a prop you choose one made for your engine. Assume there was enough clearance to install a 20 inch prop. Do you really think that would work out ok? No it wouldn't. Engines are designed with small, medium and large gear cases. The gear ratios in those cases and the HP of the engine dictates the approximate diameter props that can be fitted. If you look at prop specs, as pitch goes up, diamter comes down a bit. Conversely as pitch goes down, diameter goes up a bit. It is called "design" -- so you don't shop for specific diameter props. YOu shop for one that is designed for your engine and pick the PITCH you need. Diameter will take care of itself.
