Procedure to flush a non running engine?

Is there a way to flush out the water passages of an engine that won't run? 115 johnson.

drop the L/U, take out the tstats and stick a hose in the tstat hole. See if anything falls out the water tube.

i too would remove the tstats,,but i would ust the water ears and turn the moter over by hand,,or by 1/2" drill moter to the fly wheel ,, remove the spark plugs to ease off the compression
