I am hoping there is a computer specialist or IT person that can help me with a problem that has started with my computer in the last couple of weeks.

I purchased a new computer a few months ago (HP Pentium IV 2.8 Gig /512MB Ram) running Windows XP. I wanted to have a home LAN to allow the kids to use the old computer (Pentium III) so I purchased a 4 channel Lynksys hub/router connected to my SpeedStream DSL modem.

I set the system up and all worked well for the first few weeks and then suddenly my e-mail connect on the new computer failed after about half an hour after re-booting the computer. I can still surf the web and can actually send and receive e-mail using the old computer without problems. If I reboot the new computer the e-mail connection works again for 1/2 hour then I get the error messages "the connection to the server has failed".

I have tried to eliminate the old computer by disconnection the LAN and just have the new computer talk to the router/modem.

I have run Norton Antivires and no problems found.

I was originally using the full Microsoft Outlook and tried Outlook Express but the problem still exists.

This re-booting every 1/2 hour is driving me crazy, any body have an idea what is wrong?

Thanks in advance for your time!

Appears to be an error in Office. As your connection keeps (you can surf after email disconnects) it's bound to be something within your mail settings.

Walk through all settings, concentrate on either Outlook or Express. If no luck, try a reinstall/repair of Office.

Norton u say... makes me think when you updated the antivirus def. file?

Check this
http://support.pcnet.ca/email/outlook/outlook_xp_main.htm

The online scan funtion of Norton in XP appears like some sort of local host. Check that your mail account settings are still right, especially the server names and paths. I experienced a couple of times that Norton changed the names of the server. Change them back and everything is OK.

UU, G Dane,

Thanks guys, I think the reinstall/repair has fixed the problem. Time will tell; but it has lasted 2 hours without crashing, so looking good!

I really appreciate the help ;)

Re: Problems with Windows XP

go to linkeys web site and download the newest firmware for your router. The instructions are pretty simple to follow. Not sure if you are wireless or not but this helped My XP system from locking up every other day. Since I loaded the new firmware I have not had a problem with my router or wireless adaptor

Can you access your emails through your ISP not using Outlook?

Re: Problems with Windows XP

I hope this is not going to cause another crash, but I think I may have found the problem. My Norton Antivirus crashed after I renewed my subscription. I followed Symantec's instructions to uninstall and reinstall but it failed again. I totally removed NAV and it has worked perfectly since.
I have now installed AVG Control Center antivirus which works with out problems with my e-mail.
I've put a request to Symantec for a refund on the subscription or a solution to the problem, I'm not holding out much hope as it's near impossible to get a live person by either phone or e-mail.
Thanks again for your help!

Good luck with nortons. When I had them there was no place to send emails or to get tech help online. I had a bunch of problems with Nortons and switched to Mcaffees and have not had a problem since. You can check with mcaffees if you need a different firewall or antivirus program. They will probably give you a month trial for free. Glad to hear you found your problem.
