Problems with tach.

Im having problems with my tach on my 1998 115 merc 2 stroke. Replaced the reg/ rectifier. Have continuity on my grey wire from regulator to tach end checked grounds. Do tachs go bad??

Of course tachs can go bad. Was it working before the reg/rect change?

Thanks GA boater, no it has never worked. Is there a way to test the tach b/4 replacing? What current can i expect from my grey tach wire?
