Is any one else having problems with impeller life on their in board mounted Mercruiser engines? Just put the third impeller in a 02 Centurion, less than 100 hours total on the meter. The sea water pump is the belt driven type (same as used on Bravo type drives?). There is no strainer in the system. Both failed impellers were burnt on the face opposite the pump shaft, looks as though they have been run dry, but the engine is never turned over unless the boat is in the water. Thinking the water pick up type or placement could be suspect, but it looks fine. Any thoughts.

You might need to take a few measurements, although highly unlikely, the pump body could be under "spec"......or a burr is hanging up the impeller from fully seating

Yeah, I am thinking the housing is messed up. I had to change mine this year with 200 hours on it for the first time. Changed both the housing and the impeller. Also, are you lubing the impeller for that first start? I used liquid dish soap.

You might try putting an extra gasket between the wear plate and the body, assuming the pump is moving plenty of water.

Did not see any obvious defects in the pump housing when we had it apart. Will give it a closer look next time we change the impeller, plan on pulling it after 35 hours or so. We did lube the new impeller with liquid dish soap this time. Had the shop replace the original one, can only assume they lubed it.
