I have a 1983 Yamaha Outboard. Sometimes run fine other times not. Upon taking off I heard an alarm of some sort go off in my fwd/reverse/idle control. The trim would not work if I put it in Fwd but would work if in neutral. What is this alarm. Why would the trim not work under load.

Thanks

A complete model # would help us identify the motor you have.
Is it oil injected and is it a power tilt and trim or just power tilt motor?

Re: problems wiht 40 HP Trim

As I recently discovered the motor is a 1985. 40ETLK 6H4 L 550393 I know the motor is oil injected and I believe it is power trim and tilt.

The parts dept at our local Yamaha dealer told me the constant alarm was an indication of overheating and recommended I replace the impeller. I had a steady stream of water coming out of the motor, but was not sure it was forceful enough.

The trim works in Neutral and also slightly in the forward throttle position. As soon as I give it more throttle it quits working. I have not tried it in reverse.

If it is a power tilt and not power tilt and trim it will not tilt out/up under load.
Thermostat and water pump would be where I would start to remedy overheat

Is there also not an alarm for low oil on the injector? This was an option on my boat (which I bought used), but I seem to recall reading of this feature in the manual.
