Did you completely remove the bolt from the shift rod connector (behind those two plates on the side)?

There is nothing else holding it. If all the bolts are out, and it won't come down, the drive shaft splines are probably rusted into the crankshaft. That would be somethng rare on that motor, but possible. If that is the case, you have a major problem with few options. And it was all caused by the last guy leaving out a 15 cent o-ring.

Try gettin some penetrating oil to the top of the driveshaft where it goes into the crank. I've turned them upside down before to accomplish this - sort of difficult with a big motor. But the idea is to soak those splines where the shaft connects to the crank.

It is trying to pull the drive shaft out of the lower unit. It comes out till the water pump drive key bangs up against the inside of the pump housing, and you move it any farther. OR, it is coming out till the large section of the drive shaft bangs up against the seal. I don't know which one makes contact first. But if one doesn't stop it, the other one will.

Re: problems removing 1967 60hp seahorse lower leg

Unfortunatly, there is no way to get at it. What we don't know is how badly it is rusted in there. If very bad, you will have a devil of a time getting it out once you even get to it. I just recently removed a 10hp shaft with the same problem, and had to fabricate a clamp and slide hammer system to get it out---AFTER I got to it.

Don't keep hitting it, that won't help. There is too much mass to move. And prying may bend the gearcase.

So, you say you can see the shaft? In that case, try the previous suggestion and turn the motor upside down and spray the shaft liberally with PB Blaster or Kroil and it will run down (up) the shaft to the top. But I'm here to tell you that unless it is a mildly rusted condition, that won't help. Won't hurt either, so nothing to lose.

I told you up front that you have a major problem with no easy solution. If it won't release with the mechanic-in-a-can stuff, you are going to have to destroy some stuff. Without being able to personally access the situation, I'm thinking I would use a Sawzall to cut through the four water pump corners where the bolts are. That should allow the gearcase to slide down off the shaft (after you apply enough force to pop the seal out). I say this without knowing for sure if it is possible to pop the seal out this way, or if it is possible to saw all four corners. Once the shaft is released from the bottom, you will have to pull the powerhead, shaft and all, and work on the spline area.

Did I mention a major problem??
