Problems after running aground

I can't believe I ran a ground in the middle of Lake St Clair.

Was coming back in at 30 MPH and ran around, almost knocked the wife out cold as she hit the front when we came to an abrubt stop. Everyone got out and we pushed it out deep enough to get underway again. About 1 mile later I thought the depth finder alarm was going off and I ignored it not realizing it was actually the temp alarm( I assume) needless to say the engine died shortly after, with serious smoke and steam coming from the engine compartment. After shutting her down, I couldnt get her started again and had to call a tow boat (thank goodness I paid the $50 or so dollars for Boat Tow US) I was suprised to find water puddled on top of the engine crevises on top of the intake manifold. Wil not even crank over now.

I am assuming that when I ran aground, sand got into the engine and restricted flow such that I overheated.....Is that the logical starting point? How should I go about confirming? Any other ideas?

Thanks

Re: Problems after running aground

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, but glad to hear no one was seriously hurt (which often happens with run agrounds).

From the wording of your post, I have to assume you are not inclined to tearing into your engine. So, advice here may not help you. But your local mechanic can (although may not be cheap).

Good luck.

Where is the water pickup? Do you have standard cooling or closed cooling? Define 'water puddling on top of the engine'... What happens when you turn the key to START? Is there clicking, the starter motor trying to engage.... Anything?

We need PLENTY more information before we can even start to make suggestions... Unfortunately we can only go by what you write, so you need to explain EVERYTHING... You are our eyes, ears, nose and hands....

pictures . . . would help . . . . but it does sound like you did a nice job on the outdrive and engine.

Re: Problems after running aground

I can't believe I did this but it is true...I had the drive in gear, therefor it would not turn over....

At this point I am hopeful that the grounding has not caused any damage to the outdrive as we did get a mile out of it before having the overheat problem apparently due to a burst hose......

The hose from # 5 (Thermostat Housing) to # 6 (engine water pump)burst and was spraying water all over the engine compartment. I took the raw water pump off and inspected the rubber impeller and I was suprised to see it was fine.

Other than replacing the hose what should I be doing?
