Problem with Reverse

Hi All,
I've got an '89 Johnson 8hp that has all of a sudden lost pulling power in reverse. It goes great in fwd gear. I've put it in reverse and lifted the engine and the prop is turning. I can increase the throttle to raise the rpm's but the engine is not pulling the boat. I have this motor on a 4400 lb sailboat. Also, prior to this, it was a one pull start and it would idle at low rpm. Now it takes two-three pulls and will not idle unless I increase the throttle. Prior to all of this, I changed the lower end lube.

Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance.

Jim

Re: Problem with Reverse

It sure sounds like the hub has spun out. Try a test prop. If the performance is normal with the test prop, send yours in for re-hubbing. Expect to pay around 30 dollars for the service.
