problem with 69 evinrude 40 hp lower unit

my 69 evinrude 40 hp electric shift will not shift into forward or reverse does anyone have any answers to why this would be happening ? thanks all i appreciate it.

You need to troubleshoot to see if it's the shift controller or the wires going from the controller to the motor or something inside the motor itself that's causing your problem. Scroll up to the top of this page and about 2/3 of the way down, in the middle (left to right) is a red "SEARCH" button. Put in the keywords "selectric shift" and you will find a myriad of posts from folks with trouble like yours. Spend twenty minutes reading old posts and you'll learn all about troubleshooting your problem. It could be something simple like a loose wire or a dead battery. It could be something nasty broke inside the motor. Troubleshooting to find the cause is your first step.

if both forward and reverse are dead, I would be looking at the switches in the control box. make sure you have 12v going into the box, and 12v coming out on the appropriate wire (the green and blue ones) when forward or reverse is selected.
