All the plastics in the controls for my newly accquired 1980, 50hp Evinrude turned brittle or to mush (wrong lube? Should lithium grease?) so I bought a very similar (1991) control off Ebay. Unfortunetly the cables and harness had been cut. (Motor stolen). I'm trying to switch my cables and harness to the new box. Color codes seem the same. Clymer manual is no help here.
My problem is getting the necessary gear assemblys out (especially the big one) so as to be able to change the cables. (Not sure how that needs to be done either, but not that far yet.) After splitting the box, I took the small plates off and the allen screw out of the middle but it won't come loose/off. I pryed on it somewhat from behind but fear any more pressure might break it. I can use the old box to experiment on but don't want to chance breaking the new one. Can anyone give me some pointers here or point me in the right direction for detailed instructions? Thanks in advance.

Re: Problem switching out controls

Thanks Bob, I'm going to try and post pics to clarify what type box.

As I hope you can see, the problem right off the bat is getting the big white gear in the center out to access the cable ends. Then I'm still not sure how to detach the cable yet. I don't see any tiny allen screws on any of the cable ends or pivots. The big gear won't detach from the case. Haven't gotten to the others yet nor the wiring part of it. First things first I guess...
As I stated before. I'm trying to hookup my cables and wiring harness into the "new" box. Need help.

Re: Problem switching out controls

I finally got the gear assembly out. Should have just pulled from the lever/handle side instead of trying to pry on the gear it self. After that it was all pretty easy to switch things over.
