We are in the process of replacing the bellows on our OMC Cobra outdrive. (Model #984543 and Serial #T0500886). We are in the process of removing the gimbal housing (I think that's what it's called) and are at a loss of how to disconnect the shift cable. We detached from the engine, but are unsure of how to disconnect from housing so that we can remove it and work on replacing the bellows and water hose. We have the Selic manual that is not cery helpful, but it was all we could find. Any suggestions on what our next step should be?

If you are replacing the cable, you will need to remove the engine end by loosening the 2 set screws on the cable guide, slide off the cable guide, and then loosen the nut next to the crimp.. then unscrew the threaded rod as it enters the crimp - then you can pull the entire cable out from the transom outside the boat.. the cable where it enters the pivot housing, is screwed in, it has an o-ring, and some folks use glue on it, so it may seem stuck, you can use a flare wrench or special cable wrench to remove it - the black shift actuator should slide off as shown in your pictures.. you just need to remove the bolt holding the bellcrank in, then slide it out, and that assembly will fall apart.. so it should have already been removed.

If you are replacing the cable with new, you can just cut it off as soon as you see red behind the pivot housing, this will make it a lot easier to remove

I can tell by looking at that cable it is an original OMC replacement cable.. so I pray you are replacing it, and have done your research on the way to set this cable.. and hopefully own the tools needed to set it... Good Luck... we will all be here if you need any more help...

Here are the instructions for re-installing (hopefully replacing) the cable

This May Help

Re: Problem Removing Shift Cable from housing - complete newbie!

Thank you - the edited pics help a ton. We are planning to replace the cable and have been researching to make sure we can do it. I do have he tools on order, but I also saw in this link from another post that it can be done without it. We.'re planning to use the tool though. Husband and I have set this as the project for next weekend, so I will update at that point.

I ordered the adjustment tool from your link last night and cancelled the order from Amazon - thanks again for the help.

ON your 3rd picture, that brass nut unscrews. Your cable will go around and around as you do it.. but that's how that comes off.

I just did mine with out the tools, but have lots of yrs behind me of building, angles and tinkering behind me. It really isn't that hard of a job to do. How far have you got so far?

We are starting on it this weekend - we got the drive off last weekend (we have a limited amount of time with childcare on weekends). I will post an update on how far we get this weekend.

I understand you are replacing the shift cable anyway, but I don't think you have to remove it just to replace the bellows. I just did mine a few weeks ago.

Not sure about the water tube though.

I think you are right Projo198, but since we were going to be in there doing the work anyway, we thought we'd go ahead and make everything we could new. Since its been sitting for so long, we didn't want to any chances.

Re: Problem Removing Shift Cable from housing - complete newbie!

I wanted to get back an update on our progress. The shift cable is going to have to wait as we will be pulling the motor in order to replace the floor, stringers and transom. I've started a resto thread here:

I would appreciate any advise you can provide for our questions there.
