Problem engaging reverse

I have an 88 Force 125 on a Bayliner Capri that runs perfectly except that it just developed a shift problem. If it is in neutral, then shifted to reverse, I hear the dog tooth grinding as it is not fully engaging. If I pull back the throttle harder, it engages, but is revving too high. Engaging 'forward' is no problem. It looks like the reverse switch (if that's what it is) isn't properly synced with the cable position, but I can't figure out how to adjust it. Is this an issue with the cable or the linkage or what? Can you help? Thanks in advance!

The first thing you have to do is to adjust the shifter to the proper neutral setting. You must do this step by step by following the bayliner or force manual.

Next, you need to set your idle at 750 rpm in the water. Tie up to a dock and shift to forward and adjust the rpm. After you have done this, if you still have the problem, your dog gear is probably worn.
