Re: Printer driver question

Did you intend for these things to be done in both the W7 and XP machines? When I go to Printer properties/sharing tab on the XP machine, the choices are not active because "the options are disabled because this folder is in use by the operating system" I have not looked for this on the W7 machine yet.

Also there is no NTSF Permissions tab with all the choices that you have listed.

I do not know if it has any bearing but I think my XP machine is set up FAT32 not NTSF. I am using about an 80 gig HD that is partitioned into three drives; C, D, E.

Re: Printer driver question

What a mess.

I just have to say for the purpose of testing, make sure all firewalls are off on both computers.

I have to assume the Win7 computer is working fine on the network, can get to the Internet, etc...

You can ping the XP box from the Win7 box right?

Oh yea... and on the XP box... Start -> Run -> \\family-computer<ENTER>

Yes, do that to itself. It should see itself and the printer it's sharing. For S&G's, do \\family-computer\c$. It should show you what's in the c drive. C$ is the hidden administrative share.

Now try the same thing on the Win7 box connecting to itself. Start->Run->\\win7computername\c$<enter>

Let us know the results of this test.

Yes it is working just fine.

You can ping the XP box from the Win7 box right?

Do not know how to do that.

Yes, do that to itself. It should see itself and the printer it's sharing. For S&G's, do \\family-computer\c$. It should show you what's in the c drive. C$ is the hidden administrative share.

\\family-computer <enter> pops up a message that the path cannot be found. It does the same for \\family-computer\c$

Now try the same thing on the Win7 box connecting to itself. Start->Run->\\win7computername\c$<enter>

\\jacq-I5PC\c$ <enter> shows a page that contains the contents of the C: Drive

Let us know the results of this test.

Re: Printer driver question

Just so I know I've got this straight...

If family-computer is your WinXP box, and from the XP Box you do start->run->\\family-computer\c$<enter> (which is connecting to itself) and you get an error, THEN

Your XP box has a problem. Nothing should be able to connect to if it can't even connect to itself.

You might try running the network setup wizard on the XP box and redoing the test and see of that clears it up.

Re: Printer driver question

I see you're back boom, gone from November of last year to September of this year. Why did you return to the forum that you hated so much?

Anyway, good luck to the OP with the computer issue.

Re: Printer driver question

Just thought I would fill ya'll in on the progress. Turns out that the reason the new Win7 laptop would not see/display other computers on the network was because of ZoneAlarm that my Nephew in Law had installed on it. Unlike XP Firewall, ZoneAlarm does not seem to have a readily identifiable exclusion for print and file sharing. It is now turned off and will work on that later.

Now I can see my host XP PC and all of it's three printers. I still haven't been able to get the Win7 computer to recognize any drivers for the 2100. But at least it shows up there.

Yeah, it was suggested. I checked and the Win7 firewall was disabled. I didn't know about ZoneAlarm. Never even heard of it before.

The printer is an HP LaserJet 2100TN.

And the next question is does a remote computer use an imbedded printer driver as opposed to a driver on the printer host machine?

Did you mean Greek people or Geek people?

Re: Printer driver question

My printer is remote its not imbedded its encripted....checking on those drivers...at this point I think you should set up the Win 7 machine as host less headaches ....the drivers should be on its list or micro's should have them...I will let you know..about around here
Win 7 32 bit here
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...iesId=25469&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=4062

Are you suggesting that I try the above driver instead of the universal 64 bit driver that I tried?

As far as making the Win7 unit the host, can't do. No practical way to place the printer where I could hook it to the laptop. Besides the laptop does not have the right connector for the LaserJet. It uses one of those multiple pin connectors, not a USB.

Re: Printer driver question

Ah! Possibly a bright light. I will try to use HP's Driver Check, in your link, on the Win7 unit to see if it can see the network printer and pick the correct driver for it.

I just ran the check on my XP unit and it found the printer and said that I had the most current driver.

Even to allow the 'check' to work on the XP printer host, I had to turn off all Active X security stuff. Seems HP's little utility isn't signed, or some such BS like that.

Hope I can wade thru all that crap on the Win7 unit.

Re: Printer driver question

Remember, they both need to use the same version of the same type driver, even if that means changing the driver on the XP machine.

So I see the Win7 driver for the 2100TN is only available in the universal type. So I would do the Universal PCL 6. Again, you will need the Win7 64 Universal PCL 6 driver on the Win7 computer and the XP version of the Universal PCL 6 on the XP box. They have to be the same or it's going to tell you it's the wrong driver or give some kind of other error when you try to install.

I'm going through this on the print server at work migrating to a 64-bit server. The only difference is it has 149 printers shared and I have to make sure both XP32 and Win7 64 can connect to its print shares and print.

Re: Printer driver question

My latest research indicates that on Win7, the 2100 will only work with the Win7 embedded HP2200 laserjet drivers. But damned if I can find it when it comes time to point the printer installation to the location of that driver.

If I look for a 2200 driver on HP's website, there are 6 to choose from with no clue as to which one is the same as the one that is supposed to be embedded in Win7.

Currently when I search for a driver, it points to the HP folder that has the universal 64 bit driver that I downloaded from HP. I can do a browse but have no clue where to look for the embedded 2200 driver.

I am trying to 'add' the printer from the Network and sharing page that is now showing the 2100 on the XP machine. That only took me two weeks to get the Win7 unit to even see the other computers and printers on the network. Grrrrrrrrrrr!

Re: Printer driver question

Humm this is something...the driver package is it a zip file...if it is unzip it....if not double click the file....but before you do that go up to post up a couple and read Network set up...since during the install it says connect usb...well your not going to that right as the destructions say...read them and follow them looks like it should work ONLY use the Network destructions not the rest
