Hopefully his hearse is a little red corvette....

He will be sorely missed in the music community. He was a very talented individual.

I am simply stunned, his music was well played in many of the forward bases I was stationed at back in the day!

Not a huge fan, but I have to admit he was a very talented musician and some of his stuff was undoubtedly very well done. Sad to hear of someone so young passing away.

Amazing artist. Even if you weren't a fan of his performances, you likely were a fan of something he wrote for someone else.

He wrote his first song at on his dad's piano at the age of 7. He could pretty much play any instrument you put in front of him.

He was a true musical savant.

Talented! Inovative! He brought Soul, Rock, and Funk together and blew my mind at 10 when he released his album 1999 in October of 1982. I have been a fan ever since. He was a self taught guitarist who could play nearly any instrument you sat in front of him. He wrote hit songs not only for himself, but other great artists during his career. An independent force in the music industry who will be missed.

The rockstar lifestyle is hard on a body.
Yeah..........He was incredibly talented, his music was iconic, and he'll be remembered for a LOT of it.......

But, I guess I am being somewhat of a naysayer here because It truly amazes me that "we" as a whole, idolize musicians (good and bad) that die from drug use and in particular the good ones (like Jackson, Prince and others) that by default end up being "Role Models" . Then we agonize over why some of our own children and friends are using drugs.

Early Friday morning (the 15th) his plane made an emergency landing at the Quad Citys Airport in Moline, IL reporting a medical emergency for a "person who was unresponsive". Link to the QCTimes article:

Apparently he was suffering from flu while performing in Atlanta and was headed home.

I am not stunned, surprised or even a little shocked. The entire media is reporting that has was treated for a drug overdose around six days before his death.

I'm sorry for his family though. No one wishes that on anyone.

I believe we're using too wide of a brush to say, ""we" as a whole idolize musicians". I for one don't idolize any musician. I may like their music, but I sure don't idolize them. I would venture to guess society doesn't either. Sure, there is always a group that does... Nor is any musician a role model in my world.

I think the main shock was his age. If he was much older we wouldn't be having a conversation to this extent..

I think the drug they mentioned was pain killers. I'm hoping for a change that a high profile person who passed didn't die from drugs. That's why I'm waiting until the cause of death is made public. If it is drugs, I'll just shake my head....

Getting in late. He was a pretty amazing musician. He could play most instruments and write a song on a wim. My mom had his stuff on vinyl and tape so I grew up with it. He was kind of eccentric but never had any scandals and could get the chicks.
