Good day Y'awl. Have a 6 hp Evinrude that was tuned last spring. Used it all thrue the summer months but it performed erraticaly. Running at either wot or idling it would start to run as if it ran out of petrol or as it would run on one cylinder only or simply would run without power. When that happens I would pull the choke knob only to see no results ... I noticed the gas line primer bulb would be empty of fuel. Once the primer bulb would be skeezed a few times the engine would start running on all 2 and with full power. The problem is intermitent and at variable intervals. The gas tank is new, but the gas line hose is the original. (1974)

What do I look for to fix this anoying problem ?

A bad fuel pump should also not be ruled out since squeezing the bulb gets fuel to the engine. Is the fuel tank plastic? The reason I ask is that I've seen many (including one of my own) where plastic debris from the drilling operations remained in the tank and clogged the fuel pickup tube cause fuel starvation. Just a reminder also that the primer bulb will not, nor is supposed to stay firm during operation. It should not be sucked flat however.

A couple of things come to mind. First you could have an air leak at a connector. Secondly you could have a weak fuel pump. Check the o rings in the fuel connectors first - actually if the fuel lines, connectors & bulb are 33 years old it would seem time to replace them.

Re: primer pump looses pressure

Thank you for your advice guys. This 6 hp rude is being used by other than me at time (we share) and the last people (son & son in law) who used it (a lot) late in the fall (while I did not) both told me that this missing or misfiring problem seemed to have disapeared as the weather got colder .... hum .... they even used it to pull another boat that had sunk ... and they claim it now runs fine .... beats me. I presume they added gas/oil mix to the tank ... that could then means there could have been plastic debris in the new tank as per Sylvertip suggestion. At this point I will then wait until spring to re-evaluate that problem. (yes it's winter here ... lol)

May 2007 be good to you guys.
