primer for aluminum

i have know about zinc cromate, but some one told me that i could use automotive primer on my bare aluminum. has any one ever tried this and is it a good idea or will i end ruining my boat?

You won't ruin your boat, but you may waste your time refinishing something that will just flake off prematurely. There are numerous self-etching and zinc chromate primers avaliable for aluminum, as well as some products that will manually etch the aluminum to prep it for an application of a non-self-etching primer. Personally I just use the zinc chromate from Tempo for small projects. Anything larger and I would go with a commercial product from DuPont, PPG, etc.

Interlux makes a self-etching primer for bare metal. It's called viny-lux, a two part zinc chromate.

Just make sure you follow their directions.

They don't sell it here at iboats, but other online stores do.
