primer bulb not doing anything...

Hello all!

I just bought a Gamefisher 15hp (model 225.581503) and if the engine is cold I can only get it to start by putting gas directly into the cylinder through the spark plug hole. Once started it runs flawlessly and starts first pull once warmed up. I changed gear oil and cleaned the carb once i brought it home. So, since it runs fine I assume fuel pump and fuel lines are fine... I suspect its the primer bulb as pressing it once is recommended for cold start. I disconnected the line from the carb and when I press the primer bulb I don't feel any suction(if that's what it is supposed to do?) or anything. I attached a pic of the bulb I am referring to.

I just learned the engine primer doesn’t suck but it pushes air into bowl which gets some fuel into cylinder for easy start. But mine isn’t pushing any air that I can feel.

Is the primer thing getting fuel to it.?

Try pushing it several times and you may find it’s ok. If that doesn’t work the bulb that you push can dry out and have very fine cracks in it and may need replaced. Or there is a fuel delivery issue as mentioned check to see if fuel is reaching the primer.

Agreed ---I believe it puts air pressure on the fuel in the carburetor bowl.-----Fuel then floods the carburetor for cold start.-----So there must be a bulb on the hose from the tank to ensure there is fuel in the carburetor.-----Push and hold the button in , repeat as needed.-----This is similar to many small engines today !

So for it to work that way, the Carb is vented thru this primer thing? A choke works so much better

Nope.-----Primers like this are very common ( for 30 years or more ) on small engines.----They momentarily put pressure on top of fuel in the bowl.----Flood the carburetor. -----Start very easily.------My Lawnboy started on the first pull after sitting out under snow / rain since last fall.----3 or 4 pushes on the primer bulb with 3' of hose to the carburetor.

Thank you all for the replies. I think you’re right about the cracks because i don’t think it’s working. Bought a replacement that should be here by Thursday and I’ll let y’all know if that changes things.

The carb is vented to the Atmosphere, so pressing on that bulb, any air from from it would be vented by the bowl vent.

Nope----These carburetors just have a tiny vent.----Thus pressing on that bulb puts pressure on top of the fuel.

Gamefisher some models the same as Force

OMC may have use the name Gamefisher, but the motors were not the same.
OMC motors had a Choke, they also had the gearshift linkage where this so called Primer is located, the Fuel Line on the OMCs connected on the Port side, all of which are different on the Motor in the picture.

That is a Force engine, actually a Chrysler low profile engine.
They were also sold as Gamefisher during the Force brand period.
The same as Chrysler were sold as Wards and Sears in the late 60:es and early 70:es.
