I have a 86 60hp mercury outboard at the house it starts and runs good but in the the water once warm it does not want to idle and you can forget about reverse, the pressure gauge buzzer goes off anytime you get over 3500 rpm's for more than a minute but will go off it you slow down almost to an idle but at idle it will die?any ideas or should i try to figure out how to rebuild.

It sounds like you need a water pump impeller. Have you recently changed the impeller? If you have no reverse, the shift rod and shaft are not lined up right. It is a splined rod and shaft and you are probably off a spline or two. I replaced the impeller in my 60hp and didn't fix the problem. Replaced the whole pump and the problem went away...............Jerry

I don't know because I have never worked on anything else. I Know merc does some strange things and I think it is to keep the shade tree mechs from doing their own work. They do anyway, and this site is very helpfull.
When you take off what looks like the head, there is three domes with a sparkplug hole where you would expect to see the cyl. For some reason on the inlines they have a blind hole excessable only from the crankshaft end.
I overhauled my 60hp with the help of my brothe-in-law who use to be a chev mechanic. Between the two of us we got it done and it runs sweet. I only have about five hours on it because I tore up my shoulders and can't take it out. I have a home machine shop and that helps. I can make special tools. I don't know if I told you I replaced the whole pump and it fixed my problem. Now I have an extra impeller as the new pump came complete................It will keep.............Jerry

I normally dont hesitate to thank things apart and if it is mechanical it goes back together sometime different but usually better.:D
