Re: President Bush and Baby Largemouth Bass

I think it was a dumb thing to do on national tv. On GW's part and RM's too. But RM never struck me as the brightest stern light in the tournament and GW's proved he'll send in the big boys if ya upset him, so its not productive to mention it to either one of them.

Hummm....maybe PETA will get on GW's nerves. Now that would be interesting!

It must suck to always be under the scrutinizing eye of the public.... can't even enjoy an afternoon fishing with someone.

I don't feel it was a very smart move on TV either
but I'm sure the President was culling the small ones and he did it instinctively without flinching, as he would have done any other day of the week. No big deal in my opinion.
What should he have done? Lethal injection, electrocution, firing squad?
Maybe he should have taken the little bass home and kept it in an aquarium until someone adopted it? Unfortunately, ethics and sound management do not always coincide. If this train of thought is correct,is it "ethical" to impale a poor little minnow on a hook for a mean 'ole big fish to eat? Whats next, rubber hooks & artificial baits only?
I fish and hunt because I am. I abide by the laws and do my best to dispatch game and fish in a humane manner but I certainly make no appologies for killing either or sharing some of my take with the family pets.

Re: President Bush and Baby Largemouth Bass

So, what I'm hearing is that what he did was fine and dandy, but it should not have been broadcast to an ignorant public?

While I do understand your point, I just don't think we need to keep hiding normal behavior from the likes of PITA types and morons who just can not understand or comprehend the reasoning behind his, yours or my actions.

When I was a kid, my dad stocked the big pond on the farm with trout. A couple years later, the idiot neighbors "released" just a few Sunfish/Bluegill from the Erie Canal into the same pond. Let me tell you, it didn't take long at all before the trout were just dying....you'd go down there and they'd just be floating. The bluegill were reproducing SO fast that they were crowding out the trout...there were thousands of them. The little buggers reproduced so fast that they never even exceeded about 3 inches. You could see their little dug out "nests" as far out as you could see through the water and around the perimeter of the whole pond. You could catch em all day on an empty hook. We started stocking it again ourselves with largemouth bass that we caught at a farmer friend of my dad's pond over the next couple years. WE helped the bass along by fishing out as many as the bluegill as we could. We'd easily get 20-30 each over a couple hours of fishing. Some went to the barn cats, some to the dogs and most were left right there on the bank of the pond. OH THE HUMANITY! Well let me tell you, by the next morning they were always gone....whether we were feeding coyotes, coy dogs, or muskrats...the fish did not go to waste. And as long as I know they went to feed something, we were content and still are. The bass are doing good now, but we still feed any bluegill caught to the barn cats, let the dogs have some fun with a few and leave some on the bank.

Some might say, "oh how cruel" and would think that maybe we should have left them alone or paid someone to come in and gather the little buggers up and bring them to a nice, safe new home somewhere else. To them I say go sh*t in your hat, get a grasp on reality, and get a life.

It might be a dog eat dog world out there, but every once in a while...it's a dog eat fish world. :D

Re: President Bush and Baby Largemouth Bass

johnson-liner,
Here!Here!
I had a farming operation several years ago with the typical farm pond. I consulted the VDGIF and my local extension office as how to better maintain and manage the pond. He said most ponds would quickly become over populated with bluegill. They both said to throw out every bluegill I catch. If I didn't want to eat them or they were too small to eat, throw them over the bank. He said the choice was mine, either quality or quantity. I feel Mr. President was doing exactly the same, managing his pond. He just doesn't make any bones about it. I admire and respect that in a person.

I still work part-time with Ks wildlife and parks, and yes, management has to take place in some form or manner...letting The President's dog maul a LMBass with RM on board, wasn't the form or the manner.
To whoever said rubber hooks for minnows....we don't manage for minnows....some common sense has to be involved as well. we chuck thousands of bluegill and crappie out of ponds on the bank for control when electro-fishing, but we don't film it.
Education for proper management practices is the only way to make people understand what and why, and 90% of the public "Thinks" they understand it, but they don't.

Walleyed
From my point of view, it's unfortunate that you don't/can't film it. I think using real, raw footage like that in education would help some people understand what wildlife management is really all about. Unfortunately, as a society, we're too far gone...many people have been detached from the real world too long to say "wow...these types of approaches really do need to be used".

Sadly, at this point in history it would only provide the radicals additional ammo for their far-fetched cause.....as I'm sure the video of GW will become, which I think is your point.

Kind of like the logging issue. At this point, it just seems too late to educate people on the fact that selective harvesting is indeed a necessity. Old Mom Nature used to take care of it herself through forrest fires, but obviously too many people live in the forrest to let a fire have it's way now. Selective harvesting IS good conservation/management.

Re: President Bush and Baby Largemouth Bass

Again, I don't think it was a smart move to film that either. I told my wife as we were watching the show, "I will be surprised if the President doesn't catch some flack over that".
Although it may have not "looked good". In actuality what would have been more humane, to let the dog dispatch the fish in a few seconds or to let it lie there on the bottom of the boat and die of suffocation or dehydration?

I don't like cats either and personally classify them as vermin but killing someone's cat is now considered a felony in some states, better leave the # 4's at home.

It's not only legal, it's expected in Kansas, unless it's setting on the front porch...
