Preparation before applying 5200

Preparing to apply 3m 5200 around thru transom out drives. Have thoroughly cleaned the area and but would like to wipe down area just in case. Can anyone suggest a product eg. alcohol, thinners, bleach to remove any lingering oil residue.

tape off what you dont want the 5200 to get on.

if the area is exposed to sunlight, use 3M 4000 UV

Thats great Scott. What product do you suggest to wash the area to make sure there are no contaminants. I mentioned a few but was just thinking of Acetone /MEK?

Surface Preparation:
There are waxes, coatings, sealants, grease, oil and other contaminants used in the marine industry, making it very important to clean all surfaces to be bonded before applying 3M TM Marine Adhesive/Sealant 5200. Recommended procedures include cleaning with 3M TM General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner*, P. N. 08984.

Hydrotreated Light Naphtha (Petroleum) 64742-49-0
Xylene 1330-20-7 30
Ethylbenzene 100-41-4 5
Toluene 108-88-3
Benzene 71-43-2


Limitations -
- Alcohol should not be used in preparation for bonding as it will stop the curing process, causing the adhesive to fail..

Why do you want to put sealant around the drives?
I may get flogged for this but if you're trying to stop a leak you may have bigger troubles.

I notice there all up there in price and only need enough to cove the end of a rag. Do any of these come in small containers from a box store?

PS, just found just less than a pint of MEK in an old gallon can, would that do the trick?

I use simple green cleaner. then make sure its dry.

Step 1: Throw out the 5200. Step 2: Get the 4000 or 4200. Step 3: As stated why seal the exterior of the outdrive? if it's leaking it's in need of transom work.

Thanks Grub, understand. I haven't check much but always used 5200. What is the big difference between 4200 other than as mentioned the UV....

4200 can be removed later if need be. 5200, not even the best adhesive remover will take it off.

if you need strength stronger than UV4000 you have a structural issue

Are you sealing or using it to hold the drive on the back of the boat?
One would think the mounting bolts alone would suffice to attach it to the boat.

Did you see my message? It’s about the trim block gasket leaking. Seen that happen three times over the years.

If you use 5200 where drive meets transom, you'll rip off chuncks of gelcoat when you have to remove the drive. Seen it happen a few times.
