I boat on rivers and love the ability to go in the different tributaries and ride forever without seeing the same stuff all the time. Most of the lakes I've been to just seem small and get boring fast.
I second the chartplotter. I feel necked without one. Mines a little $200 unit but gives me tons of info including navigation markers and charted water depth. You can also mark any hazards you see so you know to stay clear.
