What I did was go over it very carefully with a razor blade scraper and then went over it with 600 sandpaper on a sanding block to get the last if any gasket residue off. Then wipe down with brake cleaner. Might have to blow out the bolt holes again and test thread in all the bolts before installing the HGs

I don't touch brake cleaner these days as a cleaner. I don't even have the stuff around anymore. Just too dangerous. It's got chlorine compounds in it. Nasty! Best cleaner I use is acetone. Still not good for you, but way less bad than brake cleaner. Google a guy who tig welded through a tiny spot of it. The man's lucky to still be alive.

they have non chlorinated brake cleaner here for a long while...
