Pre Alpha drive has no reverse

Hello have been reading these forums for a while and finally found something I cant find and answer to!

i bought a 1986 Baretta and had to replace the motor(which came with the boat) Everything works and the engine runs great but at the lake for the first time there is no reverse not to bad just pushed off the trailor then while out on the water notice that the motor temp runs around 240 any thoughts?

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,...

Probably otta pull the lower unit, 'n change out the impeller pump,...
That'll probably cure the overheat...

The shiftin' problem is probably a Bad lower shift cable...

What motor is it,..??

IT has a mercuiser 140. Are there any adjustments for the shift cable?

Ayuh,... Cables are adjusted when New...

When they go Out of adjustment, they're Worn Out...

Finnally got time to work on the boat again too bad summer in mostly gone but got the new shift cable in. Found a spot in the old one were it was rusted and broken. having trouble getting the shifting to work smooth again. i can move the shift lever in the lower housing fine by hand and the ne cable works but when i get them put together i can not shift into reverse
