First home cooked meal will be Grilled Chicken breast (roasted garlic), mashed golden potatoes, broccoli and home made chocolate cake.

Her birthday is in the 3rd, but will celebrate on the 4th.

We will all be happy to be home and thankful she is with us.

It has been a busy and interesting year in the osby household.

Our beautiful daughter continues to make great progress in her recovery.

We have a had a year filled with Doctors, Lawyers, Therapist, Psychologists, Court proceedings, Insurance claims.... All for the benefit of our daughter.

If you were to see or meet our daughter for a short period you might not know that there had ever been an accident. She has some "deficits" with short term memory and processing speed that can be noticed when spending more time with her.

We have been very fortunate as all who have assisted with her recovery are amazed at the progress she has made and continues to make. All the prayers, good thoughts and a strong willed young lady are paying off.

A sincere thank you to all who contributed here.

A few words of things I have learned that might help others here.

Michigan is a no fault insurance state. It is one of the most expensive states for purchasing insurance. We also have a Catastrophic Fund that all drivers contribute to. To date this fund has paid over $900,000.00 toward my daughters treatment and recovery. No money has come out of our pocket related to this.

Get with your insurance company and make sure you have coverage in place that if something were to happen you would be covered. We also have added a $1m rider to our policy as protection in case we were to cause an accident that caused bodily injury to others. It costs us about $250.00 per year for this coverage.

If we had been in another state where limits were set on the policy usually 250/500,000 our daughter's recovery expenses would have not been covered or treatments would have stopped when those limits were reached. The outcome of either of those would be lack of treatments and or bankruptcy. My advice is make sure you have coverage.

I changed my sig line a while back to reflect my attitude on cell phones and driving. Distracted driving is terrible and getting worse everyday. People using phones is the worst, but there are so many ways to be distracted while driving. Over the course of my life I have been guilty of just about every form of distracted driving you could think of. I have driven about 2 million miles and been fortunate to have only had two small accidents.

My advice is to pull over to text, stop to eat lunch, If we go through a drive thru, I go find a local park to eat. Grooming is done in the bathroom, not the rear view mirror. Play with the radio/stereo at stop lights, have passengers run navigation/maps. Have passengers text for you, let them play with the radio. Pull over to make that important call. If you are a passenger tell the driver you are there to help. Let them focus on driving

The above suggestions are things that might take a little more time or be inconvenient, but in the grand scheme being 5 minutes later or letting someone control the radio, garmin or phone could be the action that saves you from being in an accident. Everyday when driving I am able to spot distracted drivers, I have been able to avoid accidents by being aware and not distracted.

Yes I am very opinionated on this. Distracted driving was the cause of my daughter's injuries. It killed her boyfriend and injured two other young adults. It could have just as easily killed all the young adults involved.

Be safe, be smart and take care of yourself and your loved ones.

I forgot about all of this, 64. Glad she is has improved and it has to be a relief to the family. She still needs the good thoughts coming her way.

I didn't know the cause was distracted driving - Texting or talking on the phone, I assume. I won't answer any calls or make any when driving. The Admiral knows I'll pull over before calling or answering because that's our understanding.

Hey Mike, I'm so glad to hear things are progressing well for your Daughter and family. I totally agree with you about cell phones and distracted driving, as a professional driver I can't count the number of people I see texting all the time it is just plain scary and the consequences can be devastating as in your case.

64osby, first of all payers do work. She is living proof of that. Secondly, I have to completely agree with you on the cell phone issues. I honestly would love to see cell phones not operate once you are driving. A clever hardware/software option could do that. We use accelerometers everywhere and they can sense speed and stop the phone usage. If you have an emergency, you have to pull over. I mean how did mankind survive up to this point without cell phone in a vehicle?

Keep working with her and she will overcome everything. My wife had a stroke and was totally paralyzed on her left side. But a year later and you would never know it to meet and talk to her now. She has recovered over 90% because of constant effort. So your daughter will over come her issues as well. especially being so young.

Thanks for the update. Have a wonderful God Blessed day.

MAN! It's been a whole year since she went home! Wow. Time flies. I remember just after the accident cranking at my kids about paying attention when they're driving. Thanks for the update and the good news.

Mike - God bless you all as she (and likely all of you) continues to strengthen. Praying for peace for her as I'm sure there are still some struggles.

Thank you to all from our family. The prayers and good thoughts are very much appreciated.

GA - Yes it was distracted driving, ended up blowing a stop sign and getting t-boned by an H3. The distraction was trying to get the dash mounted GPS working while driving.

tn/Dave - It is difficult, but it is what you do, or what you should do. It is also very rewarding to be able and willing to help and see the positive outcome.

At this time our daughter goes to a 3 hour graphic arts class every morning. Then depending on the day she might have nothing planned or there might be up to 4 appointments for therapy, doctors, lawyers...... She also goes to the health club 3 days a week, which has also been good for my wife and I. We spent 17 years raising her to be a good young adult. Now we have basically a two year window to give her as much possible assistance during the "maximum medical recovery" time period. We have one more year of what I will deem intense recovery to try and achieve the best outcome. The goal is that she will attend college and also get her on a career path.

Glen - Yes it is "interesting" driving everyday. Some people are clueless. We are fortunate to still have our daughter and be in a position to assist with her recovery.

gm - There are technologies that will shut down a phone. IMHO that is not the solution. People need to be aware of their own actions. They need to take control of their own life. Putting the phone down or eliminating other distractions are personal decisions that you make. Texting is illegal in our state, that still doesn't stop people from doing it. I have seen a news crew driving down the road with both people in the front seat using their phones, looking at the screens. Maybe they will be "The Story" one day.

Almost everyone has "things" in their lives, helping others, health issues, career or money issues. If they are a good person they do what is right, an do it for the right reason, and life moves on to the next phase.

Maybe my next phase will be working on my Lone * Star again. ;)

Here she is during a vacation up north last summer. I now need to make the seat cushion thicker. Bumps tend to hurt her hip.

Glad to do it.

What a beautiful smile she has! Water therapy is the best ... at least for me. I am so glad to hear of her continued recovery. Am praying the recovery continues and she is able to fulfill her dreams and goals, but if not, that she has the grace and support to adjust those dreams and goals. With parents like you and the Admiral, Mike, I am sure all will go well.
