Re: Prairie Dog Fishn

I shoot hundreds of gophers every year.
Many people I know have cattle ranches.Around
here they are like the plague. Some poison
thousands of them. I prefer to shoot them
and let the badgers and hawks take them. That
way poison doesn't have a chance to get into the
food chain. Its just something that is a very
serious problem for cattle.

DJ, "I am probably the single most hated person on this board." ???
Did I miss something?

NOSLEEP, only problem with your leaving them for the hawks and eagles, is that now they will injest the lead, unless you are using steel. Bullets are not as bad as shot, but since these birds gulp their food, they still ingest it. Lead and zinc poisoning does terrible things to birds.

I like blast'n them with my M1A1 Super Match and Gen. 3 scope at long range..they litterly explode when that .30 cal. hollow point hits'em

Roscoe..the bullet 99.99% of the time passes through and burries in the dirt, RARELY does a bird eat the lead and I don't know of anybody that uses shotgun and bird shot to kill a gopher, that in itself is inhumane.

FBM,

My choice has been the .220 Swift, .243 and .257 Roberts. All loaded just as hot (fast) with as small a bullet as possible. The practice really hones one's marksmanship skills (especially at 200 yards +)and is completely humane.

You're right, the bullet is nowhere near the carcass.

Re: Prairie Dog Fishn

Many of you May have read my post on Dc but I would Like to explain why DJ put my redneck Hairs up

If you would read the post above DJs troll you would see that it was all in a humorus tone..
He deliberately came in here to start exactly what you are seeing here now...

A while back a few un mentioned names here wanted DC to be eliminated and considered anyone in this area as cellar dwellars..

If you are invaded with mice or rats the first thing you do is go out and buy poison, traps and anything else to eliminate them...No different with the farmers plight...Same as with the rattlesnake round up i think thats held in Texas every year..

I said earlier and asked DJ why he was here now..He is above us and only came here to start what you see now.. I have never seen him here before...Why now...I know why and so does he and I will leave it at that..

As I have said in dc...I wish all my friends well here and this will be my last post for a while..
When one uses his power to start what is happening here thats when i bow out...Positons on this board should be monitored in a neutral tone..not to provoke..

I wish you all well...Thanx for listening to my rant here..

Jeff.............

Re: Prairie Dog Fishn

Just for the record..........

In Sweetwater, TX each year they have what's known as the "Rattlesnake Roundup." This event serves several purposes. You must first understand that the Sweetwater area (west of Abilene on I-20) is infested with rattlesnakes. Each year, hundreds of participants kill thousands of snakes. In spite of the blathering of PETA and other animal rights groups, the rattlesnake population remains strong in this area. Were it not for the annual event (most of the meat is eaten, by the way), the area would quickly become unsafe for humans, and the snakes would eventually render themselves extinct in the area when they exhaust their food supply.

More importantly, the rattlesnake roundups (there are several across the country) are THE MAJOR SOURCE of anti-venom. If you are ever bitten by a rattlesnake, chances are the antidote you're given will have originated from one of the roundups. There is therefore, a valid reason for the snake hunt.

The snakes are not tortured in any way. They are methodically hunted and killed.

Barlow,

You don't know me or my father. He is a great man. One of the finest wildlife biologistrs ever. He has many projects (wildlfe hunting areas) that he created to his credit. He is still affiliated with numerous wildlife organizations and his work is for the benefit of the hunters, not the anti's. All of his projects have been managed hunt projects.

I'll ride the coatails (personal insult accepted) of an EXPERT, any day of the week. I've paid my dues too. I've harvested more pheasants, ducks, rabbits, grouse, fish than maost people. I am an expert (award winning) duck caller and dog breeder. I am also a scuba diver. I also have personal friends (rancher/farmers) in So. Dakota that I hunt on their land regularly. Our famillies are also close. Been there-seen that.

Gonfishin,

If you think I'm TROLLING in the fishing thread, get real. If I "threw one over the wall" in Dockside Chat, that WOULD be trolling. (BTW that's where this topic should have been in the first place)

I spoke my mind. I guess that is not allowed.

No troll speaks and sticks around for the beating.

Yep, I wanted DC eliminated. I'm one of the guilty ones. Guess what, YOU WON. Guess what, I don't post there anymore, YOU WIN AGAIN! (except to congratulate or encourage someone) Got a problem with that?

If ANYONE wants to defend flailing an animal to kill it-FOR FUN. Go ahead. You're feeding the cause of the "anti's".

Barlow,

I use the term expert because that is what he is. I have a great deal of admiration for that man, which doesn't cloud my appreciation of his skills.

Anyway. On a lighter note.

Yep, you're right, always had Goldens and Blacks. I have just a Black now. She is from Platte, South Dakota.

Her mother is one of the best Pheasant dogs I ever had the pleasure of hunting behind. Mine (Charbaby) is a couch potato. I've had her out in the desert a few times to retrieve doves and quail. She did very well, but there are just too many nasties (cactus, chollas, rattlers, etc.) out there.

I do not breed dogs presently-no time. :(

No antagonism taken, just your opinions, which I do respect-BTW. :)

MY,

Thanks, I'm just passionate about some subjects-like BOATS!! :D

NUFF SAID? PEACE?

Wow fellas, he never said he breeded them, or his father either from reading the previous posts. It was a bold statement to say that his pap was "one of the best wildlife biologists ever". There has been lots of them, kind of unquantifiable. Perhaps he was good, and his son looked up to him...understandable, hope my boy looks at me the same way (but not say it). This thread ought to be locked before any more salvos are fired over and into each other's bows. Let's leave this bickering crap to yahoo. IMHO

Re: Prairie Dog Fishn

just a few visual facts on the matter..

- context was originally on the humorus side

- snarring is legal

- snaring in the form of 'set snares' (trapping) is in fact a lengthy depletion of life unless the snarred critter miraculously breaks its own neck in the struggle instantaniously.

and since DJ claims he has seen that he .. chooses to ignore it in the reality of the issue

- this .. meant in humor first and taken out of context .. would be a heck of a lot quicker than a set snare ... would I do it?? No but, wouldn't stop someone else .. just an observation.

- as per responses and ridiculous claims made .. it doesn't matter .. truth is obviously not a consideration here.

- my deleted hypothesis on DJ's dog breed ... my experiences in dealing in this have been good to me ... I can pick out a Lab owner probably 98% of the time just by how they act and present themselves.

- as per my deleted responses ... done in respect to MY and Gonefishin'.

God knows those two old duffs deserve a little respect. :p
