PowerCat Issues

Good Afternoon,

I own a 20' PowerCat with a single 115 Yamaha 4-stroke. I'm having an issue when on plane. As the boat gets on plane, the prop starts making sounds as if it is coming out of the water. The rpm starts to fluctuate also. It will settle down to some degree as I play around with the trim, but in general never completely goes away (especially when traveling with the wind).

The boat also seems to run better going into the wind and also when there is alot more weight in the stern. As a test, I had a couple of my larger friends sit on the stern in front of the engine, and she seemed to run much better.

If anyone has any suggestions as to what is causing this would be most grateful.

The engine is as low as the transom will allow. RPM's are anywhere from 3200 and up approx., but it really depends on when the boat goes on plane. If it is only me in the boat, I can get it on plane at around 3200 rpm, but if there six people then about 3400 rpm. Engine is a 4-stroke 115 Yamaha. I don't currently have the specs for the prop, though, the dealer here assured me it was the right prop for the engine/boat.

HI
had a few power cats in my time and they are never really happy with just one motor, but, is the boat new or was it just repowered and if so was it OK before? there are a few makers in OZ that have got them going with one motor but they require a sort of 'keel" in the tunnel to get clean water to the prop, otherwise it is running in very disturbed water in the tunnel and have ventilation problems

It was re-powered. Had a Honda 90, which was the factory default for the boat. The keel you referred to exists. I guess one issue could be if the engine was not dead center behind the keel, this might also cause a problem.

Unfortunately, the manufacture for the this hull no longer exists, but I'm guessing this boat was orginally designed to run with one engine, however, your point is well taken.

Are you saying the engine is NOT centred? as it certainly should be! do you know if was OK before the repower as if it was we may be looking at a different cure, also make sure the original motor was not an extra long shaft 25" as it may have been and you could now have a long shaft 20", just a thought but a possibility.
