Power Trim

Hi, I have a small boat with either a 1987 or 1990 Evinrude 90 outboard V4 I can't figure which is the 1990, the boat or the motor. The power trim suddenly stopped working last summer. As I am not mechanically savey, I was unable to figure out the problem. There is no noise or clicks when I hit the up or down button. I have bought a new battery. I have checked several of the fuses that I can find. They look fine and there is no corrosion at the contacts. I have no idea where to check the fluid level.

Any ideas what I should be looking at/for?

Re: Power Trim

Bet your Tilt Motor is dead
Mine just died also and I think we have the same trim and tilt
get a circuit tester and see if you have power going to the tilt motor
if its like mine it is the canister looking thingie on the left with the wires coming out of the top
Maker sure the tester is grounded and check the wires one is up and one is down
stab the wire with the tester and have someone hit either the up or down button
if the test light comes on your tilt motor is getting power but is dead
IF however the tilt motor is NOT getting power than you may just have a burnt fuse
find the power trim box (trace the wires back) open it and check the fuse
You might also have a bad relay
when you find the box hit the button if you hear a click then the relay is working if you hear nothing then just check the fuse
good luck

Re: Power Trim

I checked the inline fuse and it is fine. I was surprised to find that the contacts were perfectly clean. The picture that you sent looks exactly like my motor. Thanks. I am wondering what else I need to check before I spend some dough. I will look for my circuit tester tomorrow.

Thanks

Re: Power Trim

I had the same problem yesterday on an 81 evinrude 90. Trace the wires back to the box, you should find 2 relays. 1 is for the trim, other is for tilt. Take a test light to them and see if it's sending out power when you activate the switch. If I remember right one will have a blue wire the other will have a green, this is where you need to check for power. A relay CAN in fact make a "clicking" noise and still be broken. The only way to tell if it's good is with a test light or other testing device.

In my case, tilt & trim didn't work, both relays clicked when activated, checked with test light, one wasn't working. Replaced that relay & everything worked great again!
