power trim problems can anyone help

I have an 84 procraft. It has a johnson gt 150 v6. The power trim stopped working (kind of)
it will go down, but wont lift the motor up. when i try to raise it, sometimes the relay just clicks, ( i changed the relay out but that was not it.) it does this on all 3 toggle switches. the fluid is full. i put a test light on the blue and green wire going to the motor, and i do have power on the wires going to power trim motor. when it does start to lift the motor up, it only goes 1/2 inch or so, and sounds really weak. is it the power trim motor, or what do i need to check?
thank you for taking time to read, any suggestions will be appreciated
thanks

Could be corroded wires. Using some jumper wires, try applying 12 volts directly at the trim pump and see if it will raise the motor.

If not corroded wires then it may be a weak battery or battery connections need cleaning "up" puts more load on battery than "dpwn" Bood luck

Like Will Bark said, possibly a battery issue. The down tilt (fast moving) portion is nothing but gravity sending the motor down after the hydraulic pressure drops. Wire brush the battery connections and wrench them tight. Put a voltmeter on it while you try to send it up and see if you get an extreme voltage drop.

If it's not the battery then you just need a new trim motor. Aftermarket/rebuilds are readily available and not expensive. Getting the tilt/trim assembly off of the midsection to do the swap can be a bad time though.

it has 3 batteries, 2 on left and 1 on the right. i was told that the 2 on left was for the 24 volt trolling motor and the 1 on the right is the cranking battery, do you know which one works the power trim?

Should be the cranking battery since engine is 12 volts only.

ok, i put a good battery in, and it done the same thing. i did find this out....there is a release screw on the side that lets you raise the motor by hand, when i loosen it up the motor runs but does not lift the wngine because the pressure screw is loose. as i hold the toggle up to raise it, and tighten the pressure screw, as soon as it tightens up, the power trim motor stops and will not lift the engine--should i just go ahead and replace power trim motor?

Since the trim motor stops when it gets pressure on it then it's probably dead, but you may want to test the motor with 12v straight into the up (blue) wire before you buy a part and go through the trouble. It's always possible that not enough current is reaching the motor.

Remove the giant pin that holds the tilt hydraulic to the powerhead, remove the side bolts that hold the hydraulic assembly in place, and drop (sort of) the whole assembly out. Then just swap in the new trim motor and reassemble. Search this forum for help getting the tilt pin out if it gives you any trouble. A life of salt water can make it very difficult to get out. There may be a little metal boss that goes between the trim motor and the hydraulic pump when you get the motor unbolted so be aware of it and check for one. If the tilt pin comes out without incident it's a 30 minute job.

Have you cleaned the positive and negative battery connections on the engine; they must be clean and tight to supply the ampherage needed for lift. Make them shiney.

are you talking about the connections that are in the box where the relays are located?

No, I'm talking about the main battery cables that are attached to the starter(positive)solenoid and negative attached to the block of the engine.

yes, i cleaned them, when i press up, the motor will run as long as i have the 'pressure" screw loosened up. ( the one on the right side of the unit ) as i tighten the screw up for the hydrolics to have pressure the pwr trm mtr stops working... as soon as it gets a little pressure on it. it starts to raise the engine, but once it moves about 1/4 of an inch it just stops
