I’m going to attempt to replace the seals on my 2000 Johnson 40 hp outboard. There was a slow leak . . I was replacing it with atf fluid . It would last for a while, but then I would have to assist it more and more . It starting leaking out the top really bad . I ordered the seal kit. I would like to know if I can refill it with the atf dex ron III or do I need to go with the Omc tnt fluid are they equivalent ? What fluid should I use I don’t remember if the original leak was red or honey color as I have heard others describe the hydronic fluid color .
Any recommendations or tips on changing the seals and refilling and what fluid to use would be helpful , thanks .

Hydraulic and ATF oils are basically one and the same. The difference is in the formulation of the additive packages and the dye used to color the product.

While any good quality hydraulic/ATF oil will work as long as a specific formulation is specified.

I use IH Hy-tran hydraulic oil mine. Hy-Tran is the oil of choice for tractor hydraulics and transmissions. Specially designed to counter water intrusion. Works well in my front end loader. Works well in my T&T

information only:

in modern ETEC T&T evinrude recommends a special "Bio oil" in their T&T .
my T&T was leaking and could not raise my engine.

After much debate on the necessity to use bio=$$$$$ oil my t&T was refilled years ago with regular Evinrude T&T mineral oil . Never had any problems after

i use HVI 68 in most of the hydraulics i have , since i buy 20 liter at a time for my truck hydraulics it works out well.
the hvi 68 is a good weight for trim rams and jacks .
