I'm in the process of lifting my 80 HP Mercury Thunderbolt off my bass boat in order to get the cap of the boat off for floor and maybe transom repairs. I need to disconnect the hydraulic lines from the power trim pump so I can feed them out to the motor prior to lifting the motor from the boat. Question: Are there any special things that need to be done prior to or after disconnecting the hydraulic lines? How much fluid can I expect there to be in the lines? Thanks for your replies.

According to the manual "The reverse lock knob must be turned fully to the left before uncapping valve ports or oil will drain from the pump"! This is for removing the lines.
You could also remove the cylinders which is what I'd do as it is easy.
You could undo the lines from the cylinders and keep them vertical as possible if you can cap them off, even better.
When reinstalling them bleed them.

Take the hydraulic lines off the pump. The hydraulic ports on the cylinders strip real easy.

The lines are full of oil. The pump will not leak much, just the oil on the outside part of the control valve. A fraction of an oz.

Thanks merk850 - Pump it disconnected and the 800 Thunderbolt motor is now off the boat at my Merc repair center waiting for a long-delayed rebuild/repair/etc. Now the real work starts on my end by taking the cap off the boat - 1977 Chrysler Pro Bass Runner 16'.
