[I have a 1992 Rinker with a 4.3 Merc. LX, thunderbolt ign. It had a hose (return line, lower pressure side) that came from the actuator on the transom that had a "pin hole" leak right before the Oil Cooler Input where the clamp holds the hose on the barb. I got a new hose (75 Bucks), 72 inches, and installed it. It blew again, same exact spot! I ran on plane for about 10 minutes before it blew. I properly bleaded the system, got all air out (no air bubbles in reservoir) and pump is obviously working because it builds up enough pressure to blow hose. Can OIL COOLERS get plugged up or at least build up resistance so that it would cause that specific hose at the same place to split? The Oil circulates because you can see in pump oil moving and feel it heating up.
Separate problem (maybe related?) - Steering is very difficult to port but not to starboard. When you crank against stops to the port it "walks" itself back to the starboard. It actually is very easy when you first start the motor but then it gets difficult. I found a manual that speaks of a "balancer" that can be adjusted but I'm just not sure that would be the same thing/problem as the steering being very difficult to the port and really easy to the starboard. Sounds like maybe Bad Seal's in the steering "piston" against the transom?
Seems like three separate problems (1) oil cooler/hoses blown at input, (2) steering difficult to port but not starboard, and (3) the steering moving itself from port to starboard when you let go of the wheel.
I was thinking of taking to local marine and paying diagnostic fee but I am sure they?d say just to replace the cooler and the actuator/valve assembly, which, may be right but I thought I would check here first.
HELP! (thanks for any advice in advance).
