Power Steering Fluid Question

Hi
I need to top off a buddy of mines P/s fluid.
He has a volvo penta 8.1 GI
can we use any off the shelf auto parts store p/s fluid?
I've heard also type F tranny fluid?

Does it matter if he is running the volvo Penta PS fluid which is colorless? i.e. can you mix power steering fluids without issue?

Power steering, fluid is power steering fluid, is power steering fluid.

They are a VERY simple hydraulic system. I suspect you could dump corn oil in there, and it would work about as well... Until the oil spoiled anyway.

Since there is no mention of what year this 8.1 Gi is, here is a Copy&Paste from the 8.1Gi B thru F models.

Maintain the level with Volvo Penta Power Trim/Tilt & Steering Fluid.
Approved power steering fluids such as GM power steering fluid or
Dexron II automatic transmission fluid can also be used. Do not overfill
the pump reservoir.
