The module sits on the timing plate boss/edge of plate where the screws are. Check old module position, with flat edge of ruler, install new module same position, install flywheel hand tight, turn slowly to insure flywheel is clearing module, check again after torqueing the flywheel nut. The special tool is a round sleeve. The hard part getting the wires back in place.

Gentlemen, you've been quite helpful and I appreciate your advice.

Vic, you're right, that's an "E" instead of a "6", I just couldn't read it real well.

First, I don't really blame the original marine shop. I suppose they would have been happy for me to pay them by the hour to do the retapping and so forth. The fact it didn't occur to them that such a possible solution existed and the only thing they could think of was to destroy a perfectly good (and expensive) flywheel is the only thing where I could say there's room for improvement. From the moment I started drilling until the flywheel was off was less than an hour.

I've already unbolted the module to look at it, so putting it back exactly as it was is moot now, as is placing a new one in the exact spot where the old one was. I note there are no slotted holes, the only adjustment available is the slop allowed in the mounting holes through the module. As such, it can only be moved closer to or further from the flywheel about 1/32". Is this really an adjustment that needs to be performed? I can understand making sure the module and flywheel parts aren't hitting each other as the first order of business. Of course, any adjustment to the placement of the module would be trial and error requiring removal and replacement of the flywheel each time. I mean, unless I use this "sleeve"?

I'm not worried about keeping the flywheel from turning while I torque down the nut. I'm using C-clamps on the flywheel edge braced against the starter mounting bosses all nice and snug-like.

A C clamp against the starter housing boss'es, and a torque of 105 ft.lbs. Don't see any problem here! You can't be serious? A simple ignition problem taken to major damage. You could wedge the flywheel with your tiger tooth chisel, and hammer on the nut with your stone axe.
