Can an old Simpson 280 series meter be used to test Johnson power pack? It has a positive and negative DC setting and a range of 500v but I am not sure if this is a DVA meter. thx in advance

That's an old classic meter, I have'nt seen one of them since I was studying electronics in the late 70's. It should work but a digital meter is better and more accurate. I'm not sure what you're measuring, if it's a fast voltage spike the meter may not be able to respond quick enough.

That is a classic, maybe the 280 has the mirror to prevent parallax. I doubt that the meter will work.

Got one of those above my desk. Used to have to use it to calibrate takeup servo motors in imax film projector. My digital meter was too sensitive. Got rid of the projectors and now it sits and collects dust
