power pack failure

What are the odds of the power pack, timer base ,stator and coil all going out at the same time on a 1989 200 evinrude? Bought a boat that had been sitting about 2 yrs. took it to run it dwn the river and it kept acting like it was running out of gas. Had a guy to look at it and he said all of the above was wrong with it. It just seems odd for all of these parts to go bad all together. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: power pack failure

Get someone else to look at it. The guy is obviously just a parts swapper.

Follow the proper steps, compression check, spark check, and then carbs/fuel.

Plenty of posts here that address your issues. search....read.....

Pump the primer bulb as it "runs out of gas". If it stays running, bad fuel pump. Note that the fuel pump is NOT in the list of parts that your "guy" says are bad.....

Re: power pack failure

The risk is minimal, but the risk is there!
A bad grounding may kill the power pack.
If a PP fails in a way that it shorts/grounds out the stator/trigger - they are all gone!!
A low voltage trigger/charge coil may, if keep on running, finally kill the PP as well.
Bottom line is that if an engine starts acting badly, one way or the other, fix it before the original failure starts a chain reaction.
What was the status of the engine when it was put into storage 2 yrs ago??

two years ago the engine was running fine, had been rebuilt recently before.

Get into the fuel system. Would bet you have some gummed up carbs or a bad fuelpump diaphragm.

Unless something got into them the electrical part don't usually go bad from setting.

Thanks, i sure hope its nothing electrical. Gona check fuel and spark today. Checked compression yesterday and all cylinders were basically the same psi.

Re: power pack failure

okay here's what i have figured out. I have plenty of fire. Took boat to river today and it still acted like it was starving for fuel. Running down the river it would act like it was running out of gas and i could hit the choke a little and it would clear up and gain rpms. Do you have any ideas? if its the fuel pump could i put an electric one on it?

I agree with busted-bayliner on cleaning your carbs out. If you have to keep hitting the choke and it picks up then the passageways inside your carb are gummed up or restricted not allowing the fuel to get to the motor like it should be and hitting the choke allows more fuel to go directly to the cylinder those picking up if there is a restriction inside your carbs. Clean the carbs out really well by soaking them for 24 hours in carb cleaner, then blow out all the passageways with carb cleaner with the straw, and then blow out with compressed air. I believe you will see a smoother running, more throttle responsive outboard, after cleaning the carbs out really good.

Clean carbs, good fire, good compression! motor runs great out of water, when you put it in the water and put it in gear it just acts like its starving for fuel! put a electric fuel pump on it and its the same way. just about ready to give up and put it on craigslist. anybody got help for me? could it be power pack?

Do a link and synch from SCRATCH! Idle timing, pick-up point, carb synch. Even check out that no play in carb plate shafts that may let false air in.

What is link and sync? Took it today and ran dwn river again and it ran like a dream for about a quarter mile ( up to 5500 rpm) then it started bogging dwn. Where do i start now? Power pack, stator or sumthing else?

oh yeah, pulled plugs out after the bog dwn and they were still wet. what does this mean? the spark is orangeish instead of blue too.

Re: power pack failure

With 2 new powerpacks and 'orangeish' spark at hot engine, I would suspect a failing stator. Run an output test of the stator after engine heated up.
