I have a 1989 evinrude xp 175 and when its on the muffs a great deal of water is streaming from the the two exhaust housing drain ports located behind the lower rubbers in the lower motor mounts.I don't remember these streams of water before or on any other motor that I've owning.I am thinking its a grommet or pump housing problem or maybe its normal. Can any give me any info before I drop the lower unit for a look.thanks

Re: possible water trouble

That's a normal function allowing water to escape, helping to keep the water from traveling up the driveshaft tube.

Re: possible water trouble

All of my flatback V6's poured water out of these holes, but only when at speed, with the relief valves open. The bubble back units (like yours) don't put out as much water from these relief ports. Would be suprised that the pressure relief valves would open at all at idle on the hose to flow that much water. I would open both thermostat housings and check the operation of the pressure relief valves. Also, make sure the thermostats are not stuck open.

After rereading your problem, am thinking that my prior comment does not apply to your problem description. Follow Joe's advice.

Re: possible water trouble

Like Joe says, it's normal. It is water that has escaped past the impeller center area and up through the hole that the drive shaft passes through. If it were not for the drains, the water would rise all the way up to the lower main bearing in the powerhead. That would be disaster.

If you have way too much coming out there it could mean a badly worn impeller. Or too much water pressure form the hose. But quite a bit is normal anyway.

Re: possible water trouble

thanks for the info. I droped the lower unit anyway because it a good chance to change the impeller and now that I see how it is designed I igree with you.I am getting some from around the pump but most I think is coming from the rubber grommit at the base of the motor. someday I will get buzy and tackle that. thanks again for the help.
