84 merc 3cyl 60 hp 2 stroke in a basstracker tournament tx. 6550713 service number.

Motor will trim up. Also all the way up with push of other button. It just will not stay up. When fully raised you can watch it slowly go down. Took lower part of pump apart, cleaned and new o rings put in. Flushed and filled with oil, and cylinders show no sign of a leak. They are dry.

Thought I would ask here before spending 800 plus for a new pump.

Ice may soon be gone and want to go fishing.

What if it still drops down with a new pump ?----Perhaps look for a good used pump ?----Did this problem start suddenly ?

If it’s not visibly leaking oil out the ram, it’s likely the valves in the pump passing. Outside the obvious reason.....being the vent screw is loose or seal passing. Worth a look before anything else !

If it's the older system with the pump inside the boat you have to bleed the system if it has the pump and rams between the clamp bracket you cycle it a few times.

Thank you..
Will try that tomorrow. I thought it would bled after a couple cycles. Now see will have to bled another way.

It was doing this when I bought it last fall. Had it out three times anchor fishing. Not far from dock either.

The two ram, pump/reservoir in the boat style PTT units are not completely self-bleeding. The pump/reservoir is self bleeding, but the two trim rams are not. merc850 has kindly provided the bleeding instructions.

IMO, bleeding the system will not help. It is worth doing however, on the chance that I am wrong. I think your issue is a leaking teflon piston seal or a bad control valve. The teflon seals do leak after a while.

There used to be rebuild kits for the trim cylinders, but that are NLA. Maybe you can find one laying around. A special tool is needed to install the piston into the cylinder, after the new teflon piston seal is installed. Maybe a dealer can install or rebuild your trim cylinders, or sell you a used one.

Well, you were right Chris. It was worth a try anyway.

It will have to wait. Boss, MA,, is already complaing about haing two boats.

Got by with it last fall, but never really wound her out,. Mostly what I will use it for is the shallow rivers we have here. With all the snags, sand bars, and rocks, you do not want to go fast. Three times out and only used bout 3 gallons gas.

Thanks all for the input.

It is nice that you can raise it up, put saver rod on, then it will drop down to it by the time you get packed up. It was reasonble on cost for the rest of it.

One more question tho. When I put new pump on it should new hydraulic hose be installed. They seamed kinda brittle and stiff when trying to fix.

Those hoses are rubber sandwiched around a nylon mesh. The outer rubber on mine went bad, but the inner rubber was still good. I taped the outside and it was fine.

You might need to get the hoses made by a shop, as I do not think they are still avail.

Make sure the manual release is screwed fully out on pump valve body.

I just ordered new hydraulic hoses for my '80 Merc with the older separate trim pump. They're about $50 per hose and made by Sierra. Boats net had the part number for ordering.
