Have had a new 18ft Lund/130 Honda for one year. My brother was a victim of low water levels on L.Michigan last night. Said he was coming back to port at 25mph when he struck two large submerged rocks in what was 12 ft of water. (they have some mammoth sized boulders in the great lakes). He said motor never died, but after two loud impact bangs, he motored in at 8mph, while the boat vibrated. Once home, I noticed the prop blades were frito'd and the was a smell of lower unit lube. The prop was also out of round when spun by hand, and there was a small (3 inch) puddle of light gray lower unit lube. Is my LU history or could it be just a ruined seal? First boat owned, just spent $2500 last week on electric downriggers, GPS,Fishhawk spped/temp at ball. I am on a fixed income so needless to say, I am stressing big time. Any ideas, prayers greatfully accepted.

Re: possible lower unit killed

I fear it has gamaged the prop shaft (and of course, the prop. Remove the prop and rotate the prop shaft, looking for a bend. If it is bent, it will have to be replaced. Your entire lower unit is not dead, but it wil need repairs, and a new prop seal. Now would be a good time to replace the impeller.<br />The prop can be sent off and refurbished cheaper than buying an entire new prop, and will be as good as new when they get done with it. The prop shaft can also be sent off,and in some cases,re-trued. But I would replace it if possable with a new (or good used) one.
