the mission: 1.pull the carpet out of a 96 Larson 215sei
2.inspect two soft spots for rot (deck obviously bad. stringers? we'll see.)
3.inspect transom for rot (i hope not)

Question: Is a plastic floor taboo? it seems with the wood and layers of fiberglass that plastic floor will save weight and time? i wouldnt think you have to fiberglass over the entire plastic, just over the seams. I would like to apply a durabak style coating and finish with snap in carpet.

Welcome aboard.

Plastic??? I really do not think you will find plastic fiberglass friendly however, There are plastic honeycomb composites that will work. As Bond-o said payback will be a LONG time.

Plywood, fiberglass and durabak (which is also $$$) are good options. Look around and see what other's have used. Make small surgical cuts at first to investigate to soft spots......... in a few (very very few) cases a patch will work to repair a spot.....but investigate you must!

A friend of mine restored a classic lonestar and used celtec plastic honeycomb and said it was expensive but worth it. Anyways the carpet is gonna go no matter what. I enjoy the clean looks of the durabak and snap in carpet so i will cross my fingers and hope for a few patches. Pictures tmrw, wish me luck!

it looks like from the tank fuel tank aft is rotten...stringers are about half gone....and the deck had two football sized soft spots....
good news though, the transom is solid, visually inspected and took some core samples and fresh wood! It is difficult to see the where the hull and deck meet, i think from the last picture i posted i will cut the foam out and try to survey from underneath(would hate to buzz the hull with the saw and create another project)

the question is: is that foam an easy task to replace? Is the amount of foam east to calculate?
by the looks of it, it is two part foam that was probably inserted from the stringers with the deck in place. I would think that if the amount of foam was not correct and the deck was in place the foam would warp and bend the deck if too much foam ws used

That really does not look all that bad. The foam is a PITA to get out, but it has to be done. as far as replacing it, you just mix and pour.

We have a 97 226 Lxi, Same layout. The deck has a few soft spots but it seems more of a dry rot than a wet rot from what I've seen. Arizona is H3LL boats that way. The deck below the bow is shot, I am NOT going to split the deck/hull, and am going to throw down a new deck in the back maybe this spring or fall. For the bow, i'm not shure what I'm going to do, open to ideas ( I have a few but dont wanna get laughed at, I'll just ket yall know if they work)

I havent throughly checked the bow area. It may need some attention.
When fiberglassing the new deck , only the top and sides get glassed? leaving the bottom raw and unfinished? My thought was to encapsulate the entire deck with good thick layers of fiberglass csm, but was told that moisture WILL find a way in and rot it out again(for a wood deck)

i have been traveling for work and will hopefully get back to work on the boat tmrw, while the belated valentines dinner burns in the kitchen, wish me luck on both!

I hear that you need to let your wood dry out before you encase it in glass. That will prevent the wood rotting from the insideout and the resin will not adhere to a moist deck.
Yes cover both sides. I placed a piece of raw wood over the tank area for three months, pulled it up and mold was starting to grow on the bottom of it and I keep my boat covered.

thats what it thought...when i ordered the fiberglass the guy said to leave the underside uncovered to let it breathe, i think encasing every side will be best...

i have been chipping away foam this week and will hopefully get some pics up this week...

66 degrees in indy today......spring fever!
