Porpoising

I have a 1995 Parker 1700 CC w/ Evinrude 88spl. After I get the boat on plane and up to speed I try to trim the engine to get the maximum performance. However as soon as I start triming the motor the boat starts to porpoise regardless of the amount of trim. This happens regardless of if I am alone or if I have others on the boat. No sure what to do to correct this problem.

put some weight in the bow. or you are trimming too far out. does the motor have a hydrofoil on it?

Re: Porpoising

Parker1700;

The motor trim allows you to use the prop angle to lift the stern and thereby push the bow down. In other words you are using the prop to compensate for the boat balance (or imbalance). Obviously this is an improper use (and inefficient use) of the prop. However the boat manufacturers design the transom with an angle to allow this (negative) trim. In short they know the boat is not balance correctly.

The same manufacturer (and his dealers) will tell you that "our boats do not need trim tabs. So I can only deduce that this porpoising is (in their minds) something to enjoy or shall I say endure.

OK I am being a bit sarcastic, but the logic still holds true.

Install trim tabs and you will then be able to put the motor trim where it is most efficient and use the tabs to eliminate the porpoising. Using a Hydrofoil may help, however since this is the same as a fixed trim plate, at some point the amount of lift at the transom will be too much and other handling and efficiency issues will come up.

Re: Porpoising

Thanks for the information. I had treid the hydrofoil previously with limited results.

Smart tabs are the way to get rid of the problem for sure....;)

I agree with TSD, there might be too much weight in the rear of the boat, and keep your trim all the way in till you get on plane, to see if that's part of the problem.

Re: Porpoising

Where is the anti-ventilation plate in relation to the bottom of the hull?

I had a bad porpoising problem with my boat that went away when I moved the engine up a few bolt holes. Mine is set so the anti-ventilation plate is about 1 inch above the bottom of the hull. It cured my porpoise and added some top speed but it definitely takes some playing around with to find out what is the best setting for your boat.

As others mentioned Smart Tabs are a great solution but you could try something simple before you go drilling in your hull.

Re: Porpoising

Had the same problem with propoising + getting the boat on plane. I installed the Smart Tabs and no more propoising and the boat comes to immediate plane. The best investment I made for the boat.
