Re: Porpoising/Hydrofoils

Another thing we haven't addressed on here is transom angle. If you have a shallow transom angle you can trim all the way down and still be vertical on some boats whereas on others like my current boat, the transom angle is so high that I can't trim up far enough to get the prop out of the water to the point where it breaks loose....rpms up and speed drops off.

Another thing is the tilt pin. If you have a shallow pitch to your transom, where is your tilt pin? I have seen boats where it was completely removed so that the driver could get a tad more tuck on the trim. Merc advertises -4 degrees from vertical.

Re: Porpoising/Hydrofoils

This is a 2012 boat and outboard, if I purchased a new boat that did this, and I already know how to trim a boat out for best performance, I would take the boat back to the dealer and ask them to fix this. Whale tails and other ad on's are helpful (to some) but with a new rig, there is more going on than I would care to fix. Many of the thoughts and recommendations are correct above, they will all help this problem, but for my $$ I would take that baby back, it was not tuned from the dealer if you took it home this way. I am making an assumption that you are the first owner, if you are not, start trying the above ideas. I would ask for a sea test after this was corrected too, the outboard could be the wrong set up and that would be really bad to discover after you have paid for it.
