Hello all I just got back from the Merc shop and they have my 70hp merc back together after it piston melt down and they said it runs great but its heating up on a idile only on No1 piston, the impeller pump has been changed, and he said that its ok at high rpm but bring it down and it gets hot on No1 so they are going to put a POPIT VALVE in . they say some motors have them and some don,t and mine doesn,t but there is a place for one.So what is this Valve and what does it do ??? and does anyone know why someone would take it out?? thanks again you guys for any help...:O

Re: POPIT VALVE ??????? what is it???

He may be refering to a secondary thermostat. I know the Force 120HP has one of these. It puts back pressure on the water circulating in the jacket, allowing the pressure to remain high enough to circulate when at idle. I don't know enough about it to elaborate, and only see this is the powerhead "exploded view" in the manual.
However, if he is refering to this secondary t-stat, it is possable that the previous owner had an overheat condition, and thought that by removing it, water would circulate freely. You can get away with this on an auto engine, but it is death to outboards. Outboards need t-stats to equallise temps and pressure inside the water circuit, thus spreading-out the heat equally, prevent heads from warping or cracking, and hot spots in the cooling system. As it was put to me earlier on this forum (I asked), "If your outboard didn't need the t-stat, manufactures would not install them, thus saving themselves 5buks per unit to produce".
Made sense to me.

Upon start up (cold engine) t-stats are closed and water pressure needs a place to go so poppit relives pressure until t-stats open (warm engine) then poppit goes back to closed position.
