pontoon hp

I have a1993 20ft grumman sportfish pontoon w/ a70hp evinrude that has a blown cylinder. I also have a1989 140hp suzuki that runs great. Can the sportfish handle the suzuki? Wil the transom support it?

No way that barge can handle a 140. The max is most likely 90, and since it was built in the nineties it may be maxed out at 70. Sorry to be a downer. Can you sell the the Suzi and fix the Rude, or sell both and get another power plant?

all depends on the rating plate for your boat, to ignore this is to invite mechanical failure or financial disaster or both

My '88 was rated at 75hp. My '08 is rated at 115hp. A 140 hp would be out of the question.

Welcome to iboats.

NO that is WAY too much for that boat, the transom will hold the engine, until you put it in gear then it will twist it right off the boat amd you will own a giant bobber.

you say a cylinder is blown, it could be as easy as a head gasket or a s bad as a broken rod , could be worth fixxing or as others have sadi sell the 140 and get a 70-75.

I am by no means a pontoon expert but I didn't think a 140HP OB would be OK for a 20' pontoon. My 2010 PB20 is only rated for a 115HP OB.

Are you into projects? Would it be worth your time and money to fix the 70 HP OB and sell it with the Grumman and take that money and put it into a pontoon that could handle the 140? Just thinkin' out loud here.
