Re: Pontiac Sunbird Progress

You guys are doing a great job!

I painted the wifes car out in the open drivway about two years ago. We hit a deer, and took off the whole right side. The car just wasnt actually worth fixing, but she is i love with her little mazda. so I told her if i could find the parts cheap i would fix it for her. I found all the parts I needed for $250.00 at the local wrecking yard. It needed a paint job anyway so I painted the hood, the bumper covers, the sunroof lid, the mirrors under the carport. Then all I had was a shell. I set it out in the driveway, (I live out in the country), up on stands, had it all ready to paint, got up early , wet the lot down and painted it, it came out great!

Well, the deed is done. HVLP is the only way to go. It was incredibly less messy than a Binks style syphon gun and it was kind of fun. Got a couple of runs in the clear coat due mostly to marginal lighting but dirt was at a minimum and I think it will all buff out real good. I will post some pictures as soon as I recover from the 6 hour/3 coat ordeal.

Here's the bird with a new coat. Now all we have to do is put all it's clothes back on and class will be over. Will post some pics when it's put back together.

Are you going to change the color under the hood and in the door jams?

Looking good, real good. Runs in clear are a very minor problem. They can be wet sanded out and buffed back to a shine. Don't ask me how I know that, my skills ain't too hot. :) My dad is good about not getting runs but I ain't so lucky. I'll wet sand with 1200 or 1500 to get the run out. Use very little pressure as the clear is not thick at all. It also may help to have some dish soap in the water. One more tip is to keep the paper wet and constantly clean it out and or replace. For the buff we use a 3M product in a tube, high speed glaze or something like that, can't think of the name. Congrats on the paint job, again it looks real good.

Ryan, the appearance of the car color is misleading due to the lighting. If you look at the section of the rear bumper in the foreground and the front bumper in the background you will get a better view of the actual color. By formula, it is the original color, so no need to do jambs and under hood and trunk.

KB, don't underestimate your skill. I've sprayed a lot of different things with a siphon gun but this HVLP gun will make an expert out of you after one test run. I didn't hardly have to wipe the gun off after doing three different coats. It just doesn't fling the paint around like a siphon gun. You just need good lighting and a little elbow room to work in. Thanks for the tips on the runs. I think I'll sand them out and get someone to run a wheel over the whole thing.

Looks great, we be proud of ya.

HVLP is great, notice the lack of overspray on the masking paper, and the floor. With a regular gun, the color would have been everywhere.

One of the best tools I've bought L'Dude. I way over protected the garage, keeping in mind my siphon gun experiences. Howsomever, to properly amortize off the tool I'll need to do some more projects. Just don't ask me to do the sanding. :D
