Polyester Resin ?

Hi everyone, I am new here. I am currently replacing a rotten transom on a 1984 Ozark Fish and Ski boat. I have basically stripped the boat down, I have the top half of the boat hanging from the rafters in the garage. I took the inner fiberglass shell in front of the rotten transom out, and also replacing the last 2 feet of the wood decking in front of the transom, it was a little soft at the very back. The boat has fiberglass stringers so all is good there, and the rest of the deck is very solid. My question is I am going to use a polyester resin with my fiberglass instead of epoxy, mainly due to cost and Lowes has it locally. I have read in other post that it does not do a good job, as far as glueing my two pieces of transom board together, because without fiberglass it is brittle. What is there other than epoxy that I can use to glue my two plywood transom boards together with, and also glue the new transom to the remaining fiberglass at the very back of the boat? Has any one tried that 100% waterproof Gorilla Glue? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Polyester Resin ?

hi.....welcome to i boats. :)

poly resin by it self is not a good glue.

but it is a fantastic product when used properly with the fiberglass.

if its cost you are going for....why not for 10 bux buy the chopped strand fiberglass matt to go with the resin and do it properly.....forget the gorrilla glue and thumb tacks.

the epoxy will do good..but again....its best with the fiberglass....and at twice the cost, and no added benefit to you....???

are you not familiar with fiberglassing?...
thats ok...not many of us were when we did our first boat.

the link im giving you....is some of the best glassing info on the forum...
you dont have to read the whole thread, but it has everything you need including how to build a transom.....how to build a deck...fantastic fiberglassing instructions and how, why, and when to use it.

hope that helps.

Re: Polyester Resin ?

Don't buy resin from Lowes , its waxed and not suitable for repair work requiring multiple layups. Waxed resin requires thorough sanding and dewaxing before a second layer can go on. Thats a ton of extra work for nothing.

Order unwaxed from US composites or any of the other suppliers.

I use this stuff, they pack the wax seperate in a bottle, toss the wax out and you have a neat little spray bottle.

Re: Polyester Resin ?

Thanks for ther information guys. Yes this is my very first time doing fiberglass work, I have been reading this forumn alot the last few nights, just so much information about so much different stuff, that it takes awhile to understand exactly what everyone is talking about, and what to use where. I will get a unwaxed poly, and will use the chopped matt to glue my two pieces of transom together. I have been sanding and grinding the last few nights and got most everything around the transom area down to good material, and will definately buy some acetone to clean well. Thanks for the links guys, I will read up on them as well, and let some more knowledge sink in before I get started with the actual fiberglassing. I will try and post a few pics of the boat, as I hopefully move forward with this project. :D

Re: Polyester Resin ?

it looks like yer doin fine.

if there are any grinding gouges in the inner side of the transom....make up a peanut butter resin mixture (its in the links we gave you) and just smear it on with a bondo spreader....then when wet just glass over it......that will fill any void areas between your new transom and the hull skin.

cheers

Re: Polyester Resin ?

For bonding the layers of wood together for the transom and to bond it to the hull, you can use a notched spreader and PL PREMIUM adhesive. One caveat though....When you get to putting the transom in, you need to work FAST as the glue will set up as soon as it is exposed to the air, and if you don't get it in and tight up against the outer skin, you'll be pulling it back off ( very difficult, this was a problem for one of us here recently ). Oop's peanut butter has a longer working time for the larger transoms. I had plenty of luck using PL for my transom as it is tiny in comparison to similar sized boats due to my hull shape. If you choose PL Premium to put the transom in, do it early in the morning or late at night before the sun and temperature becomes an issue.

Plan your work, work your plan.
