Polyester Resin vs Polyester Resin

I have found Polyester Resin locally at a substantial savings of ordering out of state, especially when there isn't any freight or hazmat charges added on. Has anyone had any run ins with inferior Polyester Resin, or is it all about the same?

Re: Polyester Resin vs Polyester Resin

Is it marine type...
There are resins that are sold locally by retailers and they tend to be the types that contain wax in them...
That is not a bad thing if plan to do all of your laminations right away, before the resin cures...
Otherwise you will need to sand the resin after it cures, to apply more layers because the wax, which is used to cure the surface, will inhibit adhesion unless removed...
If you are in doubt, check on the internet for the manufacturer of the resin and if it doesn't say specifically, you need to contact them and ask...
I can tell you from previous inquiries I have made to 3M, all of their poly resins contain the wax additive...

Re: Polyester Resin vs Polyester Resin

Hey GT1000000, Thanks for the reply and "YES" from what the guy told me over the phone it is non-waxed and marine grade. I plan on going down to the business next week to see all that they have. He said he has everything I need, CSM, 1708, hardners, fillers, rollers etc., I have put together a list from US Composites, to take with me. The savings on a 5 gallon will be approximately $15.00 on the resin only, plus saving $25 on hazmat and whatever the freight would be on it. Believe me my friend...I have read your thread, as well as many others, and I plan on comparing apples to apples. My main concern was if anyone had bad experience with brands of Resins from someplace else besides US Composites. You did a fine job on your boat...when I start mine, I hope I do as well. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Polyester Resin vs Polyester Resin

Ask him who supplies him with his resin. There are only a handful of Resin Manufacturers in the U.S. USComposites does NOT make their resin. They just get it in 55 gallon drums and repackage and relabel it. This guy prolly does the same thing. He may get his resin from the same place as USC since they're both located in the SE United States.:D

Good point WOG, I will do that, or at least sneak around and see if I can find a 55 gallon drum someplace, lol, might have the mfg. name on it. BTW, I have also read most of your threads, good job and really have enjoyed the information. I am not being sarcastic here, but what I have truly found amazing and extremely gratifying is how many of you guys, starting out with limited knowledge, have done such exceptional jobs on the boats. I know from my previous experience here when I was rebuilding the engine, that the knowledge that is available and shared by people such as yourself, GT100000, Frisco, etc. etc., is priceless. When I start my project it will be done here and I am looking forward to all the input from everyone...I still have my doubts about that GT100000 guy though, lol:D just kidding.

Re: Polyester Resin vs Polyester Resin

After sniffing all the fumes, I believe everyone will get a little freaky. Anyway....a little digging and this is what I found out. This place is called Advanced Plastics, they have a number of places, including the one here in Memphis. They list these 4 mfgs of their resins: AOC Cass Polymers, Cook Composites & Polymers, and Reichhold Chemicals. All of them show they mfg. a marine grade poly. Anyone have any additional information? I still plan on going down to their store, since they have cloth, tools, etc.,

I was getting my resin from Compositesone when I was in Louisiana. They are a National distributor that supplies UsComposites. I paid a little more per 5 gal but no hazmat or shipping, so saved a few bucks.

Thanks Trooper, I just checked their website, looks like the closest dist. they have to me is Nashville, (200 miles) Looks like they also get their product from AOC, CCP, and Reichhold Chemical...if the guy here in Memphis has the non-waxed marine grade, and the rest of his prices are good, I will probably purchase from him after I post all the info and make sure no one has had a problem...I do appreciate the feedback.

Hey, I resemble that remark...:mushroom::twitch::party::crazy::madgrin::whistle:

BTW, now that you mention it...
I started doing a search for actual manufacturers of polyester type resins and came across this site...
Polyester Resins on ThomasNet.com
Pretty comprehensive list which includes a lot more manufacturers of poly resins than I ever imagined...
BTW, not all the companies listed are manufacturers, some are just distributors...

Re: Polyester Resin vs Polyester Resin

AOC, CCP, RCI, PCCR, IP and Ashland produce laminating resin in North America.

AOC, CCP, IP and Ashland make gel coat from their own base resin.

Re: Polyester Resin vs Polyester Resin

I forgot to mention that each of these companies make a rather large selection of different resins, so just knowing the brand doesn't help much. If you see a drum there will be a code on it, this will identify the the exact product.

Re: Polyester Resin vs Polyester Resin

I noticed that Ondarvr when I googled searched and then went to their websites. They all seemed to list "marine" grade poly resin. I think I only saw one that actually listed a "no wax" and that was Reichhold. I would assume that one of the others does also, I know about the "assuming." Since I am not ready to actually purchased the resin, I will go down to Advance Plastics here in Memphis next week and talk to them and see exactly what they have, etc., etc., I will then post the info and see what the replies are. From everything I am reading on this forum....I believe I want to use the "no wax" for all applications except for the last coat; and I should be able to purchase a "Surfacing Wax" to add to the "No Wax" resin on the final application. Correct me if I am wrong - I am sure it won't be the first time and definitely won't be the last.
Thanks again to everyone that replied, I can't believe the amount of people here offering knowledge and advice. I know it was a big help when I had to overhaul the engine. Thanks again.

Re: Polyester Resin vs Polyester Resin

Yup great place this forum eh? You can add wax or apply PVA on your final coat. I found out the hard way that something is needed to cure the outer surface. I assumed that the wax was just a sanding aid when I first put down gel on my deck...liked to rip the hide right off my feet when the stickyness pulled my socks off! Turns out is is neeeded to help the curing, by putting a protective layer between the uncured resin.gelcoat to oxygen. If I understand correctly anyway...

Thanks again Trooper, kind of what I understand from reading all these threads, etc......Oh. BTW...love the shirt....at 66 years young I think think Pink Floyd is one of the best, actually was one of the best.

OK, when I want to post a pic that I have on "photobucket" Do I put Photo and image hosting, free photo galleries, photo editing into the url address and locate my file? Hmmm, tried that just now and that didn't work. LOL

Re: Polyester Resin vs Polyester Resin

Under or beside every pix in your photobucket acct, there's an IMG
Code:
. Depending on your acct, either highlight & copy that code, or click the code & it will auto-copy it for you.

Once copied, paste the IMG [code] in your post

The IMG [code] looks something like this:
IMG]http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/gg618/00a0a_16fY4s537RF_600x450_zpsc593b88e.jpg[/IMG

and puts the pix IN your post, rather then as attachments:

99.99999999999999999999% of the resin all these companies make is wax free, wax is a special order item.

Marine grade is a nice buzz word, many of them would be considered marine grade.
