I'm not sure, but generally i'd say if the varnish has no wax or oil properties, then with a sand and clean, yes you should be able to. But if, it's for sealing purposes, I would think you wont get that poly to soak into the wood for water protection.
cheers

It can, but it absolutely willnot last very long. Poly resin by itself is rather useless. Chief

You don't want to do that. Varnish usually comes loose when the moisture content of the wood it was applied to goes up and down. Eventually the varnish will peel and take the poly with it.

The best way is actually the opposite of what you suggest. Seal the wood with a couple of coats of epoxy (not poly) laminating resin. Then apply varnish over the epoxy. The varnish has UV filters in it to protect the epoxy from UV. The epoxy keeps the moisture content of the wood constant and the varnish will last longer. You can apply multiple coats of varnish and sand between coats without removing the epoxy to get a smooth finish. You can touch up the varnish as time goes on with light sanding without having to strip down to the bare wood.

Thanks for the help. Actually I had already varnished these pieces when one of my friends suggested the poly resin (he may have meant epoxy). Maybe over the winter I will strip the wood down and do it that way. We are missing too much fishing time right now.

do a serch on poly resin v's epoxy resin. Epoxy is better but heaps more expensive. Mosy people have used poly for sealing and epoxy for structual work. Just my opinion.
cheers
