Polishing Heads During Rebuild??

When I clean the heads of carbon, etc., is it necessary to polish the surfaces? I was thinking of just using a fine steel wool and thoroughly cleaning with a solvent to finish up. Attached is a picture of the starboard side on a 1986 Evinrude 90 hp outboard. They appear to be in pretty good shape after spraying a cleaner and wiping them dry. Any suggestions or comments?? This is the first motor I have ever taken apart to rebuild so Im not certain really how clean it should be.

nah that is fine.

However, I would dress the actual mating surface of the head to ensure it is true and square.

Great attachment! Will do the surface lapping over the weekend. Thanks!
